Spooky Season and Daily Art Challenges

Spooky Season and Daily Art Challenges

I love me a good fall. The chillier air, the leaves changing colour, pumpkins and spooky things are all things that I adore.

But one of the things that I really look forward to are the community daily art challenges that pop up in the fall.

I know, I know, they can be an added strain on an already stressful time of year but if I'm being honest... I do find that they are grounding. I have learned a lot by doing them, about myself and about other artists. I've connected with people from all around the globe! Some of whom have become very special to me.

This challenge is inspiring as well, I love seeing the different places that people's minds go when they hear the same prompt! It's always a delight to go out into the community and see how diverse the artwork is, even if two artists end up drawing the exact same thing, it's never the same! Everyone is so unique and I really feel a sense of comradery and community during this time which can really bolster you when the holidays are right around the corner.

I find it's nice to get back to basics as well. These challenges require a reconsidering of tools and I always go back to traditional, pencils, ink, erasers. In the digital age and the threat of A.I. It's nice to have that sensory experience again of creating something on paper. Digital is a great tool, I am in no way degrading it's use. I use digital in a lot of my online creations. I do though like the start from scratch approach and seeing where the 'mistakes' made with pen take me.

If you're interested in competing in one of these daily art challenges here are a couple tips from me that I find make it easy!

  • Have a routine - doesn't matter if you draw a little bit every day or plow through a weeks worth of prompts on one day, whatever helps you get ahead is best. I myself like to work on 2-3 drawings a day that way I can also work on other artwork and personal projects without getting burnt out.
  • Be flexible - If something comes up that makes the routine not possible for a bit never fear! You can always come back to it. If you beat yourself up about it then you might lose interest.
  • Don't compare yourself to others - It doesn't matter if someone else is drawing the most detailed, colourful or miraculous designs you have ever seen! What does matter is what you create because before you put it out there it didn't exist and that is an extremely special form of magic.
  • Enjoy yourself! - The most important thing about these challenges is to have fun! Find a prompt list that tickles your fancy or mix several! It's not serious, no one is grading you, so why not draw whatever the heck you want in the most insane way you can think of? It helps you grow as an artist if you do!

I think that's it for this time. I do have some drawing to get to! I hope this inspires you to do some too!

Signing off for now!
